#VivaLondon — Joy

| Posted by Harlan

In less than 24 hours, we’ll be getting on a plane to begin our journey back to the States. It’s been an incredible experience, and we’re so very grateful we’ve been able to be a part of it. We’re sad to leave, and excited to be home. But mostly we’re joyful. We can’t thank you enough for reading and supporting us. We love you.

We’ve been watching a lot of Inside Out at our house lately. I love that movie. It’s equal parts visually striking and a deep, poignant look at what makes up a good amount of why we behave the way we do — our emotions. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry, I won’t be giving any spoilers or reviews today. (But do yourself a favor and go watch it!)

What I want to share about here is joy. I realized that my last couple of posts have leaned on the low side. Admittedly, it’s been a challenging journey to transition to life in the UK, and we’ve now been faced with an equally tough transition back. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out the beauty (and joy) of what’s happened here for us. And the fact is, we wouldn’t feel any sadness or fear about going home if we didn’t experience heights of joy while we have been here. After all, those “negative” emotions only exist because we know we’ve found something worth hanging on tightly to.

#VivaLondon Updates – Winding Down

| Posted by Harlan

It’s hard to believe that we only have about 10 days left here in the UK. In some ways it seems like this journey is just beginning, and we’re only now starting to become comfortable in our surroundings. On the other hand, as we mentioned in our last post, there have been some challenging times for us, where we weren’t sure what to do.

We’ve seen some awe-inspiring things, met some truly amazing people, and have been privileged to be a part of ministries and a church that is such an inspiration to us to live a more Christ-centered life. Without question, these are relationships and memories that we’ll cherish the rest of our lives. And we can’t wait to share all of that with our American friends and family over coffee or lunch (probably Mexican or BBQ, let’s be honest).

People keep asking us how we feel about going back to the States. I wish there was a simple answer.

I wish I could just say we’re happy or sad or indifferent about the whole thing. But it’s not simple. It’s complicated. And I’m not sure we ever expected to be as emotionally disoriented as we are.

Two Worlds

| Posted by Harlan

Thank you for following along with our blog, whoever you are. We appreciate the good words, prayers and support that continues to roll in. I apologize that this post is a bit heavy, but I felt it important to share our hearts. We’ll post another update very soon with lighter bits – including pictures and fun stories from our travels thus far. Cheers to you and yours.

It’s difficult to put into words exactly the place we’ve found ourselves over the last few weeks as a family. I think we always expected this journey would have a bit of a cleansing and refreshing of our approach to life. Undoubtedly we knew it would be a life changing experience. Yet, even as that may be true, when faced with the reality of being refined by sudden change, the emotional nature of altered perspectives has left us in a state of suspension – equally weightless and out of the comfort of control.

Kingdom United

AKA: When God gives you a where, but not necessarily a what.

We’ve been asked quite a bit over the last few weeks and months (and especially over the last few days) just what exactly we’re doing in the UK, and what brought us to the point of decision to come here. It’s a fair question – a transition and change such as this is usually accompanied by some explanation. You’d think we’d have one.

But we don’t. Not a clear one anyway.

5 Days

| Posted by Harlan

In just 5 short days, we’ll board a plane at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and begin our journey to Watford, Hertfordshire in the Northwest corner of London, England. From the moment we felt the pull of this decision to now has felt like a whirlwind and has reached it’s climax much more quickly than we expected.

The excitement level is high in our home, and of course the anxiety level is as well. The majority of our planning and preparation has been smooth, and for the most part, we’re ready to go. On the other hand, we’ve had our difficulties – Yvette’s appendix being a surprise hiccup – and securing a flat has proved difficult, and at the moment we’re looking at boarding our flight without a home secured. We’re stressed about this, obviously, but we’re counting on the right doors to open and the right place to become available. No matter what happens, we’ve been assured we won’t be homeless!

Many people have been asking how they can support us along the way, and we are very grateful for that. We’ve been unsure exactly what to call this time – whether it be a mission trip or an exploratory trip for future mission work, or simply an opportunity for us to answer a call on our life to serve a country we love. As you think about how to support us, please be in prayer that clarity and wisdom comes through this process. If our journey ends at six months, love it or hate it, that is completely fine with us as long as it’s the right thing.

If you’d like to make a monetary donation while we’re there, we’ve set up two options here on the website. You can sign up for recurring donations here. These donations will expire after six months, when we will be returning from England. You can also make a one-time donation here. Finally, there are still a few t-shirts left on the site. Please make your order for those by midnight on Friday, as we’ll be pulling them down after that.

Again, please accept our greatest thanks and appreciation for all you have done to help us make this opportunity a reality. We love you all dearly and will miss you all while we’re away.

Cheers and #VivaLondon!

A.K.A. – How you can support us!

**** Updated August 25th ****

As we mentioned in our previous post, there are a few different ways you can support our journey to England, and the work we’ll be doing there with WellSpring Church.

First, you can pray. We need people to commit to praying for us on a regular basis. We will be updating this blog regularly so you can follow our progress and see the areas in which you can be thinking and praying. Also, we’ll be using the #VivaLondon hashtag for everything related to our blog and our journey, so you can follow us on social media through that.

London Calling

There’s a rumor about us going around. No, we’re not pregnant – but the other rumor is true.

We’re moving to England!

That’s right, Yvette and I will be moving temporarily to England in the Fall of 2015 to serve and support Wellspring Church in Watford, Greater London! This has been a journey a long time in the making, and we are thrilled to finally have it become a reality.
